Melbourne to Warrnambool: Jensen Plowright takes the win for 2021
It was an early morning drive down to Avalon airport, the sky was dark and the streets were illuminated with cold blue light. I parked the car and headed out into the lines of team cars with the media running up and down interviewing riders and filming riders preparing for their 270km bike race to Warrnambool.
Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to secure media access and fell behind in the race. Nevertheless, we were able to capture some pretty stunning photographs along the way of the grupetto. This group contained predominately riders from the local cycling scene and some NRS riders.
As the start time came nearer, we nipped back to the car and headed out planning our next stop on the ride. Something that is critical is to ensure that you stay ahead of the race at all times and that you do not get stuck at a choke point because there is no opportunity to catch back up.
We were within 5 seconds of the cutoff time for the 1st feed station and unfortunately missed out, we were still able to capture the leader’s Sam Hill (Nero Continental) and Raph Freienstein (Inform TMX Make).
After securing some pretty amazing photographs of the leaders, we jumped back into the car and headed for the feed zone to meet up with the Grupetto.
After the feed we followed the grupetto for the majority of the remaining race capturing some brilliant cycling photos.
It would be important to select a few of our favorite race photographs from the remaining 100 kms of racing.
Finally, after several long hours of riding it was time for the celebration of the winners in the men and women’s categories for the Race.
Overall it was an amazing full day of work covering this event by ourselves. We are hoping that next year we will be able to follow the race with a motorbike and capture more of the event for everyone to enjoy.
Thanks for following along.
