Australian sprinter Caleb Ewan wins the 2024 Federation University Road National Championships Criterium on his debut in Ballarat, Victoria.
The 2024 Federation University Road National Championships held in Ballarat saw great results across the board in both the men’s and women’s teams from the start with Luke Plapp dominating the men’s elite category and securing a ‘historic three-peat of national titles’ with a win never seen in 21 editions of the Ballarat race. Plapp and his teammate Chris Harper crossed the line with a 6-minute lead ahead of the next riders which further saw Jayco Alula dominate when Kelland O’Brien sprinted home for the bronze medal.
Following the great initial results, the Jayco Alula team further dominated seeing Caleb Ewam take victory on his debut in the men’s elite criterium with Jensen Plowright and Sam Welsford in second and third.
The race kicked off after a terrific result for the Liv Jayco Alula team with Ruby Roseman-Gannon taking the win with her teammates.
The race started and it was clear that all eyes were on Cadel. As the riders rolled off the startline Jayco Alula held the back third of the peloton before Rudy Porter took to the front, driving up the pace in intervals which saw riders tire and breaks started sticking.
Among the aggressors we saw Rhys Robotham (Saint Piran Uskis), Ben Carman (St George Continental), Brendan Johnston (Canberra Off-Road Cyclists)and Elliot Schultz (Team BridgeLane) in the thick of the action with multiple breakaway attempts throughout the race.
In the final 5 laps, Jayco Alula took charge, coming to the front of the peloton preparing to set up the win for Caleb. This saw his teammates Lucas Hamilton, Blake Quick, Rudy Porter and Kelland O’Brien all play key roles in his final victory.
